Burkina Faso Politics

Burkina Faso's current political order is transitional, with governing arrangements shaped by recent conflict, military intervention or an incomplete constitutional transition. Ibrahim Traoré serves as Interim President of Burkina Faso under the present framework.

Burkina Faso is governed under a military-led transitional system established after the September 2022 coup. The President of the Transition serves as head of state, and a prime minister and Council of Ministers manage the government under the Transitional Charter and subsequent transitional arrangements. The authorities have extended the transition while emphasizing security, territorial control, and institutional reform.

Legislative functions are carried out by the Transitional Legislative Assembly rather than by a legislature chosen through a normal national parliamentary election. The assembly debates and adopts legislation and performs formal oversight functions within the transitional framework. Judicial institutions continue to operate, although the political order is defined by the transition rather than a fully restored elected constitutional system.

Burkina Faso is a unitary state. As of 2026, national political life remains shaped by the transition and the continuing security conflict, and the timetable for a return to ordinary constitutional electoral government has been subject to revision.
