Guinea Politics

Guinea's current political order is transitional, with governing arrangements shaped by recent conflict, military intervention or an incomplete constitutional transition. Mamadi Doumbouya serves as President of Guinea under the present framework.

Guinea is a presidential republic under the new Constitution approved by referendum in September 2025. The military-led transition that began with the 2021 coup formally moved into a new constitutional phase when the former transitional leader won the December 2025 presidential election and was sworn in as president in January 2026. The president is the central executive authority and appoints the government under the new framework.

The 2025 Constitution provides for a bicameral parliament. Legislative elections were held in 2026, restoring an elected National Assembly after the transitional period; the new constitutional design also provides for a Senate. Parliament has lawmaking and budgetary responsibilities, while the constitutional system establishes separate judicial institutions.

Guinea is a unitary state. The restoration of elected institutions ended the formal transition, although the governing coalition is politically dominant and major opposition forces faced significant restrictions during the 2025–26 electoral process.
