Israel is a parliamentary democracy in which executive authority is exercised by the government, headed by the prime minister. The Knesset is Israel’s unicameral parliament and consists of 120 members elected through proportional representation. The government is generally formed through a coalition of political parties able to command the confidence of a majority in the Knesset. The prime minister leads the government, coordinates national policy and plays a central role in security, economic and foreign-policy decision-making.

Israel also has a president who serves as head of state and performs primarily representative and constitutional duties. Isaac Herzog holds that office in 2026. Israel’s judicial system is headed by the Supreme Court, which hears appeals and reviews issues involving government authority and law. Political debate is shaped by coalition politics, national security, judicial policy, economic conditions, religion and state, relations with the Palestinians and Israel’s relationships with regional and international partners. Together, these institutions determine how governments are formed, laws are enacted and national policy is carried out.

Israel’s political system also depends heavily on coalition negotiations, with smaller parties often holding significant influence over the formation and survival of governments. Election outcomes can therefore reshape not only the leadership of the country, but also its domestic priorities, security policies and approach to regional diplomacy.
