Mauritius is a parliamentary republic operating under a Westminster-style system of representative government. Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam leads the government and Cabinet, while President Dharambeer Gokhool serves as head of state and commander-in-chief. Ramgoolam also holds responsibility for defence, home affairs, external communications, finance, Rodrigues and the Outer Islands.

Parliament consists of the President and the National Assembly. Members of the National Assembly are elected through constituencies using a first-past-the-post system, with additional representation provided through Mauritius’ constitutional Best Loser system. The political party or alliance controlling a majority in the Assembly forms the government, while the second-largest grouping provides the official opposition.

Mauritius’ current political agenda includes economic reform, foreign-exchange stability, investment, aviation policy, public-service delivery and regional diplomacy. The long-running dispute over sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago also remains a major foreign-policy issue, with the government maintaining that Mauritian sovereignty over the islands is non-negotiable while negotiations continue over the future of Diego Garcia and its strategic military base.
