Niger Politics

Niger's current political order is transitional, with governing arrangements shaped by recent conflict, military intervention or an incomplete constitutional transition. Abdourahamane Tiani serves as Transitional President of Niger under the present framework.

Niger is governed by a military-led transitional regime established after the July 2023 coup. The National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland displaced the elected constitutional authorities, and the head of the military leadership became head of state. A transitional charter adopted in 2025 established a new political timetable and institutions, with the transition envisaged as lasting several years.

The former elected National Assembly was dissolved after the coup. Legislative and consultative functions are therefore exercised through institutions created by the transitional authorities rather than through a normally elected parliament. Executive power is concentrated in the transition's leadership, while courts and administrative bodies operate within the revised post-coup framework.

Niger is a unitary state. As of 2026, the country's political system remains transitional, and the ordinary constitutional arrangements associated with competitive presidential and parliamentary elections have not yet been fully restored.
