Russia is a federal state with a constitution that establishes executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. The president serves as head of state and exercises extensive authority over national security, foreign policy and federal administration. The prime minister leads the government and oversees federal ministries. Russia’s parliament, known as the Federal Assembly, consists of two chambers: the State Duma and the Federation Council. Together, they participate in the legislative process, approve federal budgets and address matters of national importance.

Russia’s judicial system includes the Constitutional Court, Supreme Court and other federal and regional courts. The country is divided into federal subjects, each with its own governing institutions and administrative responsibilities. Although the constitution provides for regional governance, political and administrative power remains heavily concentrated in Moscow, with the presidency and federal authorities exercising substantial influence over regional decision-making.

Russia’s political landscape is shaped by the presidency, parliamentary parties, regional leadership, economic policy, national security and international relations. The ongoing war in Ukraine remains a major factor influencing government priorities, defense spending and foreign policy. Federal authorities also play a central role in economic planning, infrastructure development and relations between Moscow and Russia’s regions. These overlapping responsibilities shape how legislation, public policy and national decisions are developed and implemented throughout the country.
