The nearby Thaba Bosiu, a flat-topped sandstone mountain, was the historic stronghold of King Moshoeshoe I and remains a significant national heritage site with guided tours. Maseru’s markets sell traditional Basotho blankets, a garment still worn daily across the country. The city serves as the natural starting point for road trips into Lesotho’s dramatic highlands. Maseru’s modest scale makes it an easy, welcoming introduction to a country almost entirely defined by mountains.
