Swayambhunath, known as the Monkey Temple, climbs a hill on the edge of the city and offers panoramic views over the Kathmandu Valley alongside its resident troops of macaques. Thamel’s narrow streets pack in trekking shops, cafes, and guesthouses catering to travelers heading into the Himalaya. Pashupatinath Temple, one of the holiest Hindu sites dedicated to Shiva, sits along the Bagmati River where cremation ceremonies can be observed respectfully from across the water. Kathmandu’s density of temples and living tradition makes it an essential stop before or after any Himalayan trek.
