The Martyrs’ Memorial, a towering concrete monument, commemorates Algeria’s long and difficult war of independence from France. Algiers’s French colonial boulevards, particularly along the waterfront, give parts of the city a distinctly European character shaped by more than a century of colonization. The Bardo National Museum showcases prehistoric and Numidian artifacts tracing Algeria’s ancient history.
