Cameroon is often called “Africa in miniature” because it contains nearly every major landscape and climate found on the continent. Within its borders are Atlantic beaches, tropical rainforest, high mountains, volcanic lakes, savanna, and semi-desert. Mount Cameroon, an active volcano near the coast, rises more than 13,000 feet and is one of Africa’s tallest mountains. Its fertile slopes support farms producing tea, bananas, cocoa, and other tropical crops.

The country is exceptionally diverse, with more than 250 ethnic groups and hundreds of languages. Both French and English are official languages, reflecting the division of former colonial territories after World War I. In the western highlands, traditional kingdoms known as fondoms preserve elaborate palaces, carved masks, beadwork, and ceremonial festivals. Cameroon is also one of the best places to encounter the goliath frog, the world’s largest frog, which can grow larger than a house cat.

In the north, the dramatic peaks and rock formations of the Mandara Mountains rise above dry savanna landscapes.
