Nearby, the ruins of Nan Madol, a UNESCO World Heritage site built from massive basalt columns on a network of artificial islets, form one of the most mysterious archaeological sites in the Pacific. The site’s scale and construction remain a source of ongoing research and local legend. Pohnpei’s interior offers waterfalls and hiking through rainforest largely untouched by development. Palikir’s location gives easy access to some of Micronesia’s most significant natural and archaeological sites.
