The Winter Palace of the Bogd Khan preserves the residence of Mongolia’s last king, filled with gifts from foreign dignitaries and traditional Mongolian art. Just outside the city, the Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue, one of the largest of its kind in the world, rises from the steppe. The Naadam Festival each July fills the capital with wrestling, archery, and horse racing, Mongolia’s three traditional sports. Ulaanbaatar serves as the practical gateway before heading into the vast steppe and Gobi Desert beyond.
