Skopje Fortress, or Kale, offers panoramic views over the city and the Vardar River below, with archaeological layers dating back to Roman times. The Memorial House of Mother Teresa, built on the site of her birthplace, honors the city’s most famous native. The city’s abundance of new statues and monuments, part of a controversial rebuilding project, has given central Skopje a distinctive, almost theatrical character. Skopje’s mix of Ottoman heritage and modern reinvention makes it one of the Balkans’ more unusual capitals to explore.
