The surrounding countryside offers a genuine sense of rural Palauan life, a contrast to the more developed tourism infrastructure of nearby Koror. Traditional bai meeting houses, decorated with painted storyboards depicting Palauan legends, can be found in villages near the capital. Ngerulmud serves primarily as an administrative center rather than a tourist destination in its own right. Most visitors pass through briefly while exploring the wider island of Babeldaob.
