The Palazzo Pubblico, the seat of San Marino’s government, hosts the Changing of the Guard ceremony that draws crowds to its steps. The Basilica di San Marino houses relics of the country’s founder, a stonemason who fled religious persecution to establish one of the world’s oldest surviving republics. Narrow stone streets lined with shops selling crossbows, ceramics, and local wine wind between the towers and the old town. The City of San Marino’s dramatic clifftop setting makes it one of the most striking small capitals in Europe.
