Freetown
Freetown, founded as a settlement for freed slaves, retains the Cotton Tree at its center, a massive tree under which the first settlers are said to have held a thanksgiving service in 1792. The Sierra Leone National Museum traces the country’s history from the slave trade through independence.

The city’s beaches, including Lumley and Levuma, offer some of West Africa’s most beautiful stretches of sand within easy reach of the capital. Freetown’s hillside neighborhoods offer views over the natural harbor, one of the largest and deepest in the world. Bunce Island, a short boat trip away, preserves the ruins of a former slave trading fort, an important and sobering historical site. Freetown’s mix of history and easy beach access make it a compelling if underexplored West African capital.
