The local fish market gives a lively, practical look at the tuna-based economy that has sustained Maldivian communities for generations. Nearby, the National Museum traces the country’s transition from Buddhist kingdom to Islamic sultanate. Male’s artificial beach and waterfront promenade offer a place to relax within the densely built city. Most visitors pass through Male briefly en route to the surrounding resort islands, but its markets and mosque reward a short stop.
