St. John’s Co-Cathedral holds Caravaggio’s largest surviving painting alongside marble-inlaid floors marking the tombs of knights. The Upper Barrakka Gardens offer sweeping views over the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities across the water, with a traditional cannon salute fired daily at noon. Republic Street, lined with shops and cafes, cuts through the heart of the fortified old town. The Grandmaster’s Palace and the nearby Fort St. Elmo trace Valletta’s founding after the Great Siege of 1565. Valletta’s compact scale and honey-colored limestone architecture make it one of Europe’s most walkable and historic capitals.
