The Botanical Gardens, established in 1765, claim to be the oldest in the Western Hemisphere and include a breadfruit tree said to descend from those brought by Captain Bligh. Fort Charlotte, overlooking the harbor, offers cannons and sweeping views over the town and out toward the Grenadines chain of islands. Kingstown’s waterfront served as a filming location for parts of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, adding a note of Hollywood history to the harbor. The city’s markets and narrow streets give a genuine, unpolished look at daily Vincentian life. Kingstown serves as the practical gateway to the string of smaller islands that make up the Grenadines.
