Preseren Square, named for Slovenia’s national poet, anchors the pedestrian-friendly center lined with pastel Baroque buildings and riverside cafes. The Central Market, designed by architect Joze Plecnik, whose influence shaped much of the city, offers fresh produce alongside a lively riverside promenade. Ljubljana’s near-total pedestrianization of its historic center makes it one of the most relaxed and walkable capitals in Europe. Its small scale and green spaces, including the extensive Tivoli Park, give the city an easy, human-scaled charm.
