Sanaa
Sanaa’s Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage site, preserves some of the world’s oldest examples of vertical mudbrick architecture, with tower houses decorated in intricate white gypsum trim rising several stories above narrow, winding lanes. The Great Mosque of Sanaa, one of the oldest in the Islamic world, reflects the city’s deep religious significance.

Suq al-Milh, the old salt market, has traded spices, textiles, and qat, the mildly stimulant leaf central to Yemeni social life, for centuries within the old city’s covered lanes. Sanaa’s distinctive architecture, unchanged in character for over a thousand years, makes it one of the most visually unique cities in the Arab world. Ongoing conflict has made travel to Yemen extremely difficult and dangerous in recent years, and visiting is not currently advisable. Sanaa’s extraordinary architectural heritage remains, nonetheless, one of the most significant and irreplaceable in the Middle East.
