Yaren
Yaren, Nauru’s de facto capital district, sits at the southern tip of the world’s third-smallest country, its parliament building and airport runway occupying much of the flat coastal land. The nearby Command Ridge offers the island’s highest point, with rusting Japanese World War Two artillery still in place amid views over the entire island.

Nauru’s coral reef, close to shore and largely undisturbed, offers surprisingly good snorkeling given the island’s small size and heavily mined interior. Anibare Bay’s small beach remains one of the few easily accessible stretches of coastline suited for swimming. Yaren’s modest scale, walkable in a matter of minutes, reflects Nauru’s status as one of the least-visited countries on earth. Travelers who do make the journey find a rare, genuinely off-the-map island experience.
