Conakry
Conakry, Guinea’s capital on the Atlantic coast, offers the Grand Mosque, one of the largest in West Africa, and the National Museum, tracing the country’s history and its role in West African independence movements. The Botanical Garden, established during the colonial era, preserves tropical plant species along the city’s outskirts.

The nearby Iles de Los, a short boat ride offshore, offer beaches and a more relaxed pace away from the busy capital. Conakry’s markets sell produce and crafts reflecting Guinea’s diverse ethnic groups, including the Fulani, Malinke, and Susu peoples. The city’s role as the first French African colony to declare independence, famously rejecting Charles de Gaulle’s referendum in 1958, gives it particular historical significance. Conakry’s coastal setting and offshore islands offer a worthwhile if underexplored West African capital.
