Biography
Nikki Haley was born on January 20, 1972, in Bamberg, South Carolina, to Sikh immigrants from Punjab, India. Her father was a professor and her mother held a law degree from India. She attended local schools and graduated from Clemson University with a bachelor of science in accounting. After college, she worked for her mother’s clothing business, Exotica International, and helped make it a multimillion-dollar company. Haley began her political career in the South Carolina House of Representatives, where she served from 2005 to 20112. She was elected governor of South Carolina in 2010 and reelected in 20141. She was the first woman to serve as governor of South Carolina (2011–17).
Haley is a candidate in the 2024 Republican Party presidential primary for president of the United States in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. She announced her campaign in February 2023.
